Going to have to have to renew some swivel components asap but I'm confused about what bearings to buy.
Been to four local motor factors today, all say they don't sell bearings. (And quoted me £78 for a rear wheel bearing kit!!)
On ebay, and in guides I've read about changing the bearings (though they are usually on defenders / discos) they look like this:
RANGE ROVER"CLASSIC" LOWER SWIVEL PIN BEARING (PAIR) on eBay, also, Range Rover, Car Parts, Cars, Parts Vehicles (end time 28-Apr-09 17:51:46 BST)

But when I was looking on another website which happened to have all the other bits I need they looked like this,
Upper:
BEARING-SWIVEL PIN

Lower:
BEARING-SWIVEL PIN

Mine's a 1991 RR Classic WITH ABS.

What should my bearings look like?

Don't worry!! take a look at MM 4x4, Famous Four, Paddocks, or any one of a number of parts suppliers. They have kits for which ever bearings you want to do. Wheel bearings are easy and cost about £16.00 + VAT and postage, worth getting some any way and a swivel kit is quite cheap too, I think about £30.00 + VAT and postage but includes shims, seals, needle bearings and one shot grease.

Don't even bother with spares suppliers when it comes to bearings. The swivel bearings are standard taper roller bearings which are of higher quality and cheaper and easy to obtain from your local bearing supplier. Just quote the no. on the inner race or take the bearing with you as a pattern and ask for either FAG, SKF or other reputable make, not the crap Taiwanese ****e.

I took it apart yesterday and found that my upper bearing looks like this:

Will there be a taper bearing in there as well or is that it?
Going to be doing the job on Wednesday probably so I need all the right bits before I start it.
Cheers for the help :)

Could have sworn that there are an upper and lower taper roller bearing fitted to the swivel ball, the preload on which are determined by fitting shims between the swivel bearing pins and the bearing..maybe things have changed but I definately remember replacing the bearings on my 91 Classic 3.9 SE and there were one at the top and one at the bottom. I also replaced the chromed ball housing because it was pitted and pi**ing oil past the seal (Common problem).

Cheers Kev....I'll now step back into the shadows as it's been so long since I did any work on the old swivel ball setup and what is discussed is for you guys who have current knowledge and experience to fly the flag:bolt::bolt::smokin:

No, not at all. Since I have been a member I have learned a great deal from your input in a variety of posts. Anyway, back to the topic in hand I have a feeling that the older set up was different and I think it was changed with the introduction of ABS. Looking at my Haynes book of lies, the older non ABS swivel is shown with two taper bearings. As with all cars, it is important to know what variant you have and what parts you need for the job but have to admit it can get a bit confusing.
