I opened my tool box recess at the weekend only to find it nearly full of water. I cannot find any way this could happen, has any one else any ideas or have had similar experience.

Yes I had exactly the same, strange thing was the carpet around the box was bone dry.

Dried out the box and so far it has stayed dry.

Check the condition of your rear door tailgate membrane (behind the panel). Damage there from previous work on the window etc will cause leaks. Fix with a good gaffa tape and plastic sheeting.

Also check the rear door/tailgate rubber seal for damage/wear.

Its not always a negative thing.

I took the lid off mine and kept Newts in it for ages.

If it wasn't for that emergency stop outside Sainsburys, they would still be there today. :(

Sometimes I wonder why the feck the search box is there.

There are almost ZERO new issues with Freelanders and all the past ones (including fixes) are to be found by searching ! Aghhh.................

My hippo reads the forum. Don't challenge him.

Sorted this on a friends FL.
Get some flash banding from B&Q or somewhere, then remove the carpets from the rear storage area and from in the tool box. Drill a couple of holes, about 6 mm down in each corner.
The water is getting in around the joint between the rear area floor and the tool box; it is only spot welded. Clean the area around the joint, making sure that it's dry and free from grease, dust and stuff.
Cover the joint completely with the flash banding and ensure that it's well stuck down.
Dry the carpets and replace them. Problem should be sorted.

Thanks Brian, was wondering how so much water could get in, too much for condensation. The carpet had already been removed (well partially trimmed) before I bought the vehicle. I will give this a go. Mind you could come in handy for transporting some guddled salmon or trout.
