and you'll get time for them to grow while you drive to them Carrying on with this petrol/diesel debate, in the modern world of 4x4's, opting for diesel is a no brainer, much better mpg, low/mid range torque etc,etc. But I dont think the P38 diesel falls into that catogery. If it returned mpg in the 30's I would be first in the que, unless your a 25k(miles) per year man (or woman) I don,t think the figures stack up. As we all know both the diesel and petrol have the potential to be money pits in terms of maintenance/repairs. The reason I opted for the V8, (which lets face it is no "hot rod") is because 90% of my driving is around London and the south east,driving the diesel around here with all the other "rat racers" would be too much like hard work! Most of the other 10% is in Northern Norway up towards the artic circle, when I used to take the diesel disco up there if I didn't keep putting the additive (not cheap) in the derv it used to freeze up, so petrol suits me better up there aswell. If you do high mileage and intend long term ownership theres always the LPG option. Its horses for courses, and as we all know, if you want cheap affordable motoring, you woudn't buy a RR, petrol, diesel or LPG!

Why it is surprising?
A person buying a L322 do not have to consider about fuel consumption - at least when buying a new one. The TDV8 has been on the market for a short period and therefore is not very common yet. It is the first diesel engine worth the RR badge - at least to my mind. Others are seriously underpowered.

how old is the one your swaping mate,im after a v8 .tom.
its a 2000 W reg with 70k miles on the clock..
what do you have?

the old petrol v diesel chestnut again , as timov said the new tdv8 is the only diesel engine landrover have ever produced thats been worthy of the rangerover badge all the others have been as flat as a plate of p*ss .ive owned a couple of diesel rangerovers but , these where late classics which i converted myself by fitting jap diesel engine into them one was an isuzu 2.8 td and the other a mazda 3.5 tdi and both gave great performance and mpg and , surprisingly where very civilised to drive as well.
i`ve owned a couple of p38`s now both have been petrol , my present one is a 4.6 lpg converted hse and its without a doubt the best rangerover i have ever owned and as far as cost per mile is concered i doubt any diesel p38 can match it @ 41p per litre for lpg and no noticable loss in performance you can keep your oil burners
and i`ve still got that fantastic v8 exhaust note .rick.

Diesel is good for the wallet, but bad for the soul.
If someone said "You can have one gallon of fuel, either petrol or diesel, and any vehicle in the world to burn it in, but it's your last gallon ever" would you choose a diesel?
I wouldn't. I'm afraid to say I'd be choosing petrol and something with an extremely high fun quotient. Lamborghini Murcielago, Range Rover Supercharged, Bowler Wildcat, Porsche 911 turbo, ariel atom, etc.
I'd not be thinking "oh, well, I'll get 15 miles for the petrol, or 25 for the diesel".
So, to answer your question, I'm driving to Czech to see friends, but the trip is for my enjoyment. I drive diesels when I'm working, but I'm going to take the Rangie because I love it. If I wanted to save money, I'd fly to Prague and get the bus to Liberec, or hire a diesel Corsa, but that, to me isn't enjoying a driving holiday, it's ruining one.
