Swap axle or jiggle bits?

Ive just bought a second hand disco front axle to replace the knackered front one on my old 90. Having taken 4 of us to load it up and remove it at my place, im wondering if its possible to leave my old axle casing in place and fit the disco diff, swivels drive shafts etc (retain 90 calipers) as this would be easier to do single handed. is this possible?

i replaced the rear axle on my 90 with a disco 1... i left the wheels (and tyres) on and wheeled the old one out and the new one in.. i did have to jack pretty high to clear the tyres.. then lower the car down onto it.. linning it up was a bit of a sod..but i wouldnt have been able to do it any other way(on my own).. im gonna atempt the same tecnique on the front axle tommorrow.. so we'll see;) i'll let you know how it goes..
 
G Man - axle still had most of radius arms. shocks swivels hubs , discs and calipers, anti roll bar, track rod and drag link still fitted and me and the three helpers are not small blokes - if you live near newark id be glad of you bench pressing it into place while i put the bolts in!!
Seriously tho, would the newer disco bits fit in a basic 90 axle?

it took two of us to carry the bare axle away.. still uncomfortably heavy.. i personaly wouldnt bother stripping the innards out, ive just swapped front axles (a disco front onto my 90) and it was pretty straight forward..

1)unbolted panhard rod from steering box end.
2)unbolted both o/s and n/s radius arm bolts (the big 30mm ones)
3)unbolted both top shock mounts
4)unbolted front prop shaft
5) disconnected both front brake hoses in chasis mounts (left calipers on axle- swap l8r)
6)unbolt steering damper (chasis end)
7) raise front end by a few feet (i used an engine crane on front chasis)
8)recovered both front springs and compressed both shocks
9) freed both radius arms from bushes
and rolled the axle out from under car...:D

this took bout an hour and half.. ive just rolled new axle under chasis and replaced springs and shocks and connected top strut mounts.. so far no stress.. looks more straight forward than taking halfshaft and diffs apart plus im not sure if you'd have to set the diff backlash up in a new axle casing??;)
