Hoots mon...
Hi, been asked by a friend to do a g/box oil service on a 2005/6 S/C L322.
I know it's the six speed but I still need to find out the oil spec and overall procedure.
I don't foresee it being too different from the 4.4 ZF but If there is something inherently specific to be aware of I'd appreciate your input.

I intend to do a couple or three sump dumps over a few months and was wondering if I ought to leave the old filter in until the very last dump when fluid is in optimum condition/colour, any thoughts on this would be appreciated.
TIA

My belief is a used filter will perform just fine (if not better) in the interim so long as it is intact but I appreciate your reasoning.
Not priced it yet.

It is also my understanding that by simply doing sump dumps I will not encounter any issues with adaptions resetting which I've read can possibly instigate wear in the clutches as the motatronic unit tries to re-learn shift points.

Only use ZF Lifeguard Fluid 6 and a genuine Filtran sump/filter on a 6HP26. If you are tempted to use a cheap pattern part sump/filter and a ‘multi-use’ fluid then you’d be better off just leaving it alone (You might be able to save £100 using the incorrect fluid/filter. A replacement transmission costs £2000).

It’s a common procedure to replace the sealing sleeve at the same time (while the sump is off) if it still has the original ‘orange O-ring’ version fitted

Firstly thank you very much for the info Phil, I was rather selfishly hoping you would pop by with the correct advice.

Secondly, It was my intention from the outset to only use a Genuine pan/filter and oil along with upgrading the connector sleeve, advice on which I'd gleaned from one the Yank sites you (RRphil) had posted on.

Lastly, this is for a friend who has absolutely no problem funding a RR, merely he has issue with trusting a dealer to do what is a pretty simple task armed with my trusty laser thermometer and 2 poster.
He makes no mention of any transmission gremlins but he is a newcomer to the fold.
I've yet to have my little test drive in it.;)
I'm pretty much in the camp of sump dumps, 2 or three over a 1000 mile+ period and then when oil colour is good I shall replace the pan/filter/connector.... I'm interested on your take regarding this plan?

I hear mention of a square gasket, is this on the valve body and something that needs changing?

Thanks again:)

I don’t have a strong opinion on when is best to change the sump/filter but they are expensive so you’ll only want to do it the once. Leaving it until the last drain & refill sounds fine to me.

I guess the ‘square’ gasket that you referred to is probably the bridge seal to the casing. You’d have to remove the Mechatronic unit to replace it so, as long as the owner has no issues with their transmission, I wouldn’t bother with this.

Yes, that's probably the one.
I'll see if it's shifting ok, no biggie to fit it if required.

For the benefit of others I wonder if you have that list of compatible fluid I had seen posted on that Yank forum by yourself, I do appreciate your stance of not recommending anything but ZF but of course other marques use this gearbox in high output form, like BMW, Jag, Ford, Bentley etc.
Maybe folks have a kindly parts person in one of those dealers.;)

Cheers.:)
