Out the front, spanner in hand
Went to do an oil change on me Landy to find that the hexagon sump plug has been transformed into a blob of chewed metal. Tried all sorts of stuff, filing flats, stillson wrench but just cant get enough grip to undo it.

Was thinking maxbe weld a nut onto it should do the trick, question is, is this safe to do on the oil sump, has anyone else ever done it?

Can you not chisel the head and drive it loose? It'll mean a small sharp chisel or knock something up out of tool steel. Tack welding a nut may do the trick if you can get a good weld on it. Why is it so tight in the first place?

I would give it a good clean, get all the crap off it, give it a good squirt with some penetrant oil/wd40/ferrosol/diesel/summit solvent based! Have some weetabix, get the big moleys out clamp em on hard as poss and go for it. (lefty loosey righty tighty!)
If that fails maybe the chisel smashy smash approach might prevail.

(if you do end up carrying out the nut welding approach remember to disconnect the battery and alternator first!)

Just to give closure on this one, welded a large nut onto the plug and was able to undo it no problem with the ratchet, only took 5 mins to do all this as well.

Hardly ever used the welder before I bought my 110. since then its provided hours of fun:):)

Sounds good, but there is a tool called and easy out, which is a left hand threaded cone.

You simple drill a hole down the middle (not all the way through or it would get a bit messy) then put the tool in and turn it out. - There a life saver if you snap off a head bolt or any other bolt for that matter.
