Was underneath looking for an oil leak and noticed a little rust on the bottom of my sump pan.
Started peeling off the rust and was left with not much so I want to replace it.

So,is there a better sump pan?

Is there anything else I should do as long as I am pulling it down?

Thanks.

Nope just get a replacement, give it an extra couple of coats of good paint to keep it good longer, they don't really stay wet and are not usually caked in mud so if they do fail it's because the paint has been damaged and it's been left to rust for years.

If it is very thin and rusty it would be worth changing it, my 300tdi sump developed a leak quite suddenly and it was at the worst possible time - sods law also says if you don't change it it will fail when you least want it to!

What engine do you have?

300 tdi.

Its very thin, I think if I push my finger hard enough it will break!!

I placed the order with Famous Four.
Should be shipping out by the end of the week.

Also orderd an EGR block off kit hoping that will perhaps get rid of some of the smoking.

Thanks.

Take your inlet manifold off when you do your EGR, and put it into a basin of kero to break down the sooty oily gunge, wash it all out, and refit.

Some of the EGR valves have a wider valve body at the top and make it near impossible to get a hex bit in to undo the bolt, cutting the valve body off from the narrow point lets you get a hex bit in square.

Start scooshing the bolts with WD40 or penetrating oil or something, some of them can be very stuck.

Sump replaced, was easy.

I was shocked at how clean the oil pick up was, looked brand new.
Whoever owned this truck must have changed the oil very regularly.

Next will be the clutch master and slave cylinder.

I am soaking the EGR bolts with WD-40 for a few days before attempting blocking it off.
