Sump - Anaerobic

Gotta replace me sump gasket,

and checking Rave* its says to use a [SIZE=-1]Anaerobic sealant, i can't get hold of the one listed on Rave, any of you guys done this job and what did you use instead of if any ?

Someone mentioned using a GM (vauxhall) equivalent but without the part number or name they use mentioning the word [/SIZE][SIZE=-1]"Anaerobic" [/SIZE][SIZE=-1]to the Vx parts guy got the expected huh? response..

I can too say that I have used blue Hylomar. If you cant get hold of this then RTV sealent will do the job. Got mine from LR dealer for about £5 for a plastic tube.
 
halormar or rtv is just fine [high temp + ally un steel bolts] dont corrode due to electrolitic action un fings. . . .:)
 
An anaerobic adhesive is a bonding agent that does NOT cure in the presence of air.

They are asking you to use a non-setting gasket goo.

Hylomar is good. Rolls-Royce patent originally.

Squeeze me, Charlesy - an Anaerobic adhesive is one the will CURE in the absence of air - such as Threadlock, Studlock etc, not one that doesnt cure in air. Cyanoacrylate (superglue) is another - but it still sets in air.

No!
an adhesive which needs to vent a solvent to atmosphere will never set without air.
an adhesive which cures chemically can cure without air - and may or may not cure in air, depending on the adhesive.
 
Right does anyone have a tube of Hylomar? On it will be the patent number, which will be listed in the patent office as to what chemical is used. Patents only last 20 yrs, If you havent made your money by then its not worth the paper it is written on. Everybody else jumps on the band wagon.
 
"Anaerobic" is one that stays uncured in the presence of oxygen and will cure when there is none, its a double action sealant if you like..

Basically because the bit that is compressed, between the flange and gasket will set and "excess" thats left either side will not cure, and so will not get clogged in oil holes and galleys...

Anaerobic seemed like overkill to me for a sump, its a car not a deep sea vessel after all, hence the reason i was asking what you guys were using..

halo, loctite rtv, etc all seemed fine to me, but with it being a landy ya never know they seem to overly complicate simple things other car manufacturers don't do but prove to be less reliable....eh ? :)

I never had this leak until i changed from semi-synthetic to fully-synthetic.. might be coincidence...but it seems the better cleaning effect of synthetic worked its way past the crud that was sealing the sump in the first place...

for sump, made from pressed steel usually use rty sealant every time , for a machined surface ie an alloy casting ,,,use hylomar
