hello

After running smoothly since I've owned my TD4 it's suddenly started to get lumpy & smoke a bit when first started up - after about 30 seconds or so it idles as smooth as butter as it always has...on the road there's no adverse fumes either.

Any ideas what this could be?

Well I'm still trying to solve this problem of intermittent lumpy idle and a puff of white smoke of firing up.

Disconnected the MAF - made no difference. Cleaned the connector.
Disconnected the fuel rail plug behind the EGR delete, cleaned. No difference.

Did a leak back test and I'm uncertain if this is a problem on this TD4 as I've had massive & rapid leak back on Merc 220cdi injector before so know what that looks like - and this is no where near as severe after 30 seconds:

After a minute and a bit:

How does this look to a knowledgable eye?

Do these injectors need a service?

Thanks!

They should all have the same amount in the bottles all being good so looks as if one is not using as much fuel as others

Be worth getting them all tested and refurbed as necessary

as it is diesel and it has gone cold now are you allowing the heater plugs to warm up ,heater plugs are cheap so it maybe worth changing them as I did and it stopped the smoke on first start up. try leaving them until the dash light fro heater plugs goes out switch off and do it again you may find a difference in the amount of smoke

Thanks guys! That PDF confirms that it looks like #2 is a faulty then. Off to refurb then.

Yes Teddywood I let all the lights go out before cranking -there's never any hesitation on start.

Thanks again. I'll post back with results after a test/refurb/service on the injectors.

Any recommendations in SE or by mail service?

As 3 and 4 are even it would reasonable to assume 1 and 2 are faulty.

Had the same problem, tried redex diesel additive over several tank fills (ASDA diesel)...no difference, tried one tank full of shell diesel, now runs a lot smother and no smoke on start up, well pleased.

For the record I fitted a replacement injector on #2 this past weekend and the TD4 is running as smooth as butter. Did the injector cleaner thing a few times and it improved somewhat but the roughness slowly returned. Bought a "tested as working" injector off a breakers to see if that would cure the problem and it's completely resolved the issue. Result.
