Hi All....

Been quiet on here as I don't wanna spend any money on the Range...

However, was bored at work the other day, so decided to check my levels....topped up the coolant as I have leaky o-rings (not got courage for that yet) Power Steering all good, Brake Fluid all good....then onto the Oil...checked it, nothing on the dipstick....checked again...same....so I put 4ltrs of oil in, checked it, nothing on dip stick, popper anoth 2ltrs in...just registering...left for a few days...checked it, same as before, just registering...so put 2ltr in....all good on dipstick.

So I havent checked since, but my question is, where did 8ltrs of oil go? I park in the same place everyday nothing underneath.....

The last time I had anything done was about 6months ago when I had the oil coolant pipes changed.

If it was light that much on oil I'll be amazed if your engine is not shagged. Petrol or diesel? Either way, engines burn oil, some more than others. It should be checked every week if it's in daily use.

+1 James that's a lot have you any blue smoke comming out the exhaust warm it up go smell the fumes comming out if it smells rancid there is your answer

What engine is this? Got to be a diesel or he is dipping it on the side of a mountain. And people wonder why engines go knackered.

I met him once I think its a petrol but I really can not remember must be a massive leak or he never checks oil

So he has put a total of 8 litres of oil in an engine that is full with 6.6 that would be a good trick, unless he is dipping it on steep hill, surprised it has not blown every oil seal out of it by now.

Oops wammers diesel , lol I'm defently not a petrol head

Ok....thanks guys....realise I've been stupid not checking it....and I do deserve the abuse....and can take it!!

To answer all questions, it's a diesel, I checked on flat ground, was filled up 5/6 months ago.

No blue fumes, just the normal diesel dust as I call it....

I recall reading that it takes 9.5ltrs of oil.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but would that really burn up in 6months??

My engine seems fine....the only thing that does work on the car.....!!

Tony, what would the normal service time/miles be for a diesel?? (I'm guessing more often than I have done....)

Most say 6 k ish but it really depends on how much Milage you actually done. May be you never wiped the dip stick when you did a change and just got away with the bearvMinimum.

Hmmm.....probably not done 6k, but still that should only be time for a change, not all gone :)

I had that garage do the pipes, and even have them the 2 gallons of oil!! They probably only put 1 in and sold the other one!!!

Anyway, booked it in with my specialist now, full oil/filter change, gearbox filter and oil and diff oil change too!! I can do the filters and stuff.

I would change the engine oil and filter every 6000 miles on any diesel. Check level once a week. No need to use expensive stuff just normal oil will do. You can go semi synthetic if you have a mind to, but fully synthetic is a waste of money in my view, unless you use the extended service intervals it is designed for. All engines with a few miles on them use oil. Jags used a pint every 1000 miles from new. Regular checking is a must, once every six months is a little careless.

Thanx Tony.....that answers my question....it has just burned up :)
Luckily Halfords was doing £10 for 4ltrs so not much of a waste as next week it's going in....

I have learnt my lesson, taken my slap on the wrist and will now check regularly....
