My indicators or hazards weren't working due to a dodgy relay.

Last week I fitted a set of RDX led lights all round and changed the relay and all was good and everything worked perfectly... for about 10 minutes

Fitted a standard flasher unit relay and everything worked fine again albeit the indicators flashing too quicklly. Put in another RDX relay and was fine again... for another 10 minutes or so

Then just decided I'd throw in a standard relay as the ones to suit the LED lights appear to be sh!te.

Down the road, the standard relay gives up the will to work and have no indicators or hazards once again

Anybody have any ideas whats causing the relays to keep blowing. fuses are all fine.

Could be a number of things, have you tried pulling the cap of the one of the busted relays for any clues?
ie are contacts burnt? Or does the coil look cooked?

Did it all work ok before the upgrade or was the upgrade to put right problems that were already there?

If it is burning relays out due to excess current you should be looking for low voltage possibly a trapped wire, bad ground connection or the current draw on lamps to great for the system, maybe a faulty lamp?

These are just some of possible causes

Upgrade was to out right the problem really as old relay was gone but didn't realize that until fitted the new one and lights as a few bulbs were blown and a lot of the contacts on the standard lights were badly corroded or broken in the holders.

I fitted a new relay today that's supposed to be an extra heavy duty one and also fixed my trailer light socket as few wires were broken on it and the new relay seems to be lasting fine so far anyway.

Possibly the RDX relays are just crap. Annoying now that I have to live with indicators that think there's blown bulbs until I can find a decent relay to work with the LEDs or possibly fit some resistors.

I would have normally said you have voltage drop issue based on the fact LED lights often work just as well if theres reduced voltage.
I fitted some recently that operated between 3 & 36 volts!

So where as a filament lamp would glow dim an led may work as normal masking the problem, but the fact that a standard relay is flashing to quick would indicate thats theres less load on the system.

How are the relays failing? Are you sure you don't have an issue on the coil side rather than the contacts?

Not really sure. Haven't had a chance to open the relays that blew and probably just going to send them back. The one I fitted yesterday is still perfect anyway though and working as it should with just the hyper flashing.

I'm going to buy a decent LED suitable relay during the week and try that as I reckon the RDX ones are just ****e
