Stupid and confused about oils

do all mine evety 1000miles..and thats with the best oil one can buy.(vr1 or mobile 1 10-60)...as do gearbox (manual) oil..

my engines look like new inside!..

Sorry to drag an old thread up, but stumbled upon it, it makes a very interesting read.
The main thing with the rover 3.5 is that it has hydraulic tappets, so oil MUST be 20/50 and oil filter and oil should be changed a minimum of every 2500 miles. If not you'll get a very 'tappety' sounding pretty soon, especially if used on short journeys. 1000 miles certainly isn't overkill if you have high power output.

So??
Its your engine, do what you want. But 2500 mile changes will see you never have to replace tappets or a cam.
My old man sticks to this and he has the sweetest sounding 3.5 I've ever heard.

Also I know nothing of the larger capacity V8's in the P38's, do they have hydraulic tappets? I presume they'd be different to the 3.5 (this is the only v engine I've owned or roughly know) as they are more modern, so perhaps don't need such religious servicing?

Never disputed your comment did I? Just said I'd have to change the oil every 2 months.....

All the Rover V8's had hydraulic tappets, aslong as the servicing schedule is maintained, they will run forever, it is neglected service intervals that kill engines and other mechnical equipment.

That is the problem with the written word, context and tone can be lost....

Never disputed it, my exclamation of 'really' was one of 'well I never' not 'are you sure'......

I then went on to state that in my case the oil would be changed at an increased frequency......

I know mate, sorry for jumping to the wrong conclusion.
Anyway, you regularly drive a V8, I have no argument with you!!! :)

He certainly right that short journeys do not suit V8s and more frequent oil changes needed!

They don't suit auto-boxes either. My RRC is not a daily driver, so when it does get a run I always aim to do a minimum of 15miles, usually 20 - 30.
