I've not long got a 2nd Series 3, and I've got a problem with the yellow knob. It's stuck down in the 4WD postion and won't come back up. I've dropped the red lever into neutral and tugged on it but it ain't shifting. Any ideas?

Tried that already, it's not going anywhere. The old bloke I got it off said he didn't know what the knobs were for and that he'd never touched them, and I tend to believe him. It's got FWH hubs with aren't engaged, so it could of been going round in 4WD for years

Hmmm, hope its not stuck in 4wd. I have got that job to sort on my series box. From what I can see on drwgs the is a collar that slides across to join front and rear shafts.

crap description i know.

don't think that it would matter if 4wd was down and the hubs were out....i'd take the tunnel off, its gonna take you 5 mins unless all the bnolts are seized and you need to use the one size fits all seized bolts tool. I had the same problem once and it turned out that the spring was weak / broken on the yellow knob and it can back up ok witha screwdriver when 'manipulated' changed the spring and it was ok. Something may have got jammed there, could be a bunch of silly things, tunnel out!!

du ya need a special spanner for them bnolts???

Have you got a workshop manual or a Haines book?

Just near the bottom of the Hi-Lo box gear stick is a small cover over the shafts to the transfer box - take that cover off and I'll bet that one or both those shafts are gummed up with old grease and cak, get a bit of oil in there and force them free - if they're not too bad they will ease up and work for the next ten years or until you take the box out for one reason or another - good luck

I think you would know if it was stuck in 4X4 it doesn’t like cornering, an interim option as said earlier is to engage the free wheeling hubs if you have them.
The beat option is to get access and check to see where the linkage is situated.
