Stuck in Neutral...

G'day,

Drove into work the other day and went to shift up and couldn't get into a gear, went to shift down same problem... was still rolling so pulled over and stopped stuck in neutral cant select any gears with the engine running... had to use the works disco to tow it off the main entrance road...

Now I'm thinking its probably the clutch release fork however the pedal feels the same as it always has... is there anything else it could be? I'm a bit stuck for ideas other then the clutch plates themselves

It was bound to happen sometime I guess...

Have you checked that you haven't 'nudged' the diff-lock lever by accident ?

I have indeed and the level of clutch fluid...

A few problems spring to mind:

Failed master or slave cylinder.
Any evidence of leaks?
The slave cylinder leaks into the bell housing.
If you have a wading plug in you won't see it.
If you are changing one cylinder it is worth doing both.

The flexi hose can be ballooning.

Worst case is that the clutch release arm has worn through where it is pushed by the slave.
That is a gear box out job.

Try bleeding it first.
If you pump the clutch several times are you getting a better pedal, if so you are losing pressure in the system...

More than likely it's the master cyl seals gone internally.
don't bother with repair seals, get a new one and also fit a new slave cylinder as well, as when a new master is fitted the other goes soon after and visa versa.

when fitting the slave, be careful when you pull it out not to pull out the push rod onto the release arm. they're only held in by an nasty plastic clip which soon comes out. YOUV'E BEEN WARNED!
then you've got another job refitting that if it does, can be done without taking the box off, but it's a pain none the less...

Hmmmm cheers for the suggestions... This looks like it going to be a lot trickier then what I thought, I currently live in a flat so any major works are a little out of the question at the moment...

Check a few things first ...

Pump the pedal - get any better?

Any leaks?

Is the fluid in the M/C a 'funny' colour? - a bit blackish or has black bits in it

Does it 'splash' in the M/C when pumped?

Its still stuck at work I'm afraid as I had no way to get it back home but from what I remember:

Pump the pedal: tried that a few times when I couldn't get it into gear don't remember it feeling any different


Fluid Colour: From what I remember looked OK didn't look black or burnt

I don't remember seeing any leaks either ill have another look tomorrow tho when I get a chance...
