P38A Stuck in low range

Hi

Any advance on this? To the OP....when you set the transfer motor to the required range manually using a 12V supply - how did you determine the correct ratio position? Did you use the 4 switches and read the open close status of each to determine correct position?

As there is Left Stop - Left of High - High - Right of High - Zone 1 - Neutral - Zone 2 - Low Range - Right Stop......

Problem being I really am not sure what you refer to......... Thanks again.
As per the attached images taken from the RAVE manual.....

The Transfer Box motor has a set of position switches which shows where in the motor rotation it is....set the TB to a ratio - move the motor to the correct position as indicated by the Gray Binary switches - and fit.

Ok I have found something here: http://www.exploringnh.com/tech/FSM/Electronic-Troubleshooting-Manual-RR-P38-eng.pdf

Page B6. Still struggling to understand where the motor position is in relation to the selector.

Ok. Sorry to be a pain but I am very confused.
My transfer box ECU (AMR5254) has a very different looking connector to that shown above.
Where is the connector I need to read the values on?

Thanks

Are you at the ECU end?

Under the passenger seat (RHD model) and I have 3 ECU modules.
Transmission
Air Suspension
Transfer box - This is the one I am at the end of. There are 3 rows of pins in the connector.

I am guessing transfer box ECU is where I should be as it would make sense. But I could be wrong.

Cheers

Sorry, the first connector was for the later Bosch TB ECU controller.....yours is the earlier one as above.....

Now, using the electrical diagram

Take the motor off - using a meter on the switch contacts of the connector on the back of the motor - monitor the switch operations until you get it to be at the required ratio - then fit back on.

The Contacts on the motor connection are thus:

So find the associated connections on the motor than correspond to the connections above and turn the shaft, the switches will operate as the shaft is turned and will indicate the motor position.

This is great, I thought I was going mad for a moment. Although this does not rule out any madness, it does give me more to get going on.

Cheers for that.

Update.
Found some time to get on with this at last. Fixed. Thanks to all of you for help.
I think the motor must have just stuck. Once I checked the switch positions with a meter I worked out it was simply in the wrong pos when I bolted it back on the first time.
Worth noting that the pic of C568 is reversed to what you actually see, so I guess the pic is looking at the connector on the harness hanging down from underneath.
Once I figured that out it explained why I was getting weird switch positions.

Anyway, all sorted so it seems. No more select neutral.

Cheers

Well done James and thanks for cutting the suspense and letting us know what had actually occurred. Sure someone else will have the same issue before long!

t/box selector shaft has 3 positions, faults are usually motor or t/box ecu
I have no useful input for this type of techie stuff. It's waaay above my pay grade but did have to comment on this post.
I have just spent the week in Yorkshire and read this twice in a Yorkshire accent before realising, you weren't saying 'the box' but were saying ''transfer box'.:D

Thread resurrection.
Oh well, it lasted about 3-4 years. Started getting the Select Neutral message again, more and more frequently. Then permanently.

Taken the motor off and found this in the pic. Is it broken? I thought the little brown lump was grease at first. It's the same colour as the grease in there, but solid and seems plastic.
It's come off the screw-looking thing, maybe an end stop device?
What are your guys thoughts?

So at the mo she jammed in low range, needs to jam into high to be usable. The spindle in the transfer box seems to move freely enough through about 270 or so degrees (guess).
But I no longer can work out where high is, and as far as deciphering how I worked it out before, well that is another story.

The black line I put on last failure (3-4 years) ago but not seem to help now, the actual transfer box is on low which is where I marked the other red line, or at least that is where it stopped when I went to low range. Now it will not go high.

Any advice welcome.

I think I need to get a 2nd hand motor and try again, no idea what happened to this one, SNAFU.
Cheers
