Tried to change the fuel filter today on my 1998 DSE but it just rotated without unscrewing. I guess something has sheared in the housing but can't think what. It's not leaking diesel and runs fine. Never seen inside the housing so just wondered if any of you more experienced owners can hazard a guess. Looks like the whole thing will have to come out at some point.

More than likely the filter outer case spinning on the inner part with the thread in that the outer case is crimped over.

try putting a filter strap on the very top edge of the filter as you pull on the filter strap to undo the filter it should squeeze the top of the filter to stop the outer part spinning i had to use a large pair of grips when mine did it but be careful not to break the plastic housing i got a mate to hold the plastic housing while i pulled on the grips

Finally got round to sorting this today. Had to take the filter and housing out to get the filter off. As Wammers predicted the outer casing was spinning on the crimped rim. Got it off by putting an oil filter chain strap on the crimped edge with the filter housing gently held in a vice. Took quite a bit of force. Don't know whether whoever put it on had eaten too many Weetabix but at least it's off. Filled new one with diesel and put it all back together. Job done.
