wheel studs dont randomly strip and fall off while driving along, unless they have been significantly tightened

If they had just had the vehicle in and the thread is now knackered and nut is missing they are responsible and negligent.
If the thread stripped taking the nut off they should have told you and it then becomes one of those things.
If it was already stripped and they just put the nut back on a stripped thread they are also negligent.
Tell them to fix it or send them the bill via the small claims court, maybe they will listen to you then.

That stud doesn't look snapped to me. Looks more like the top of the nut has snapped off leaving half of it still on the stud. If you take the wheel off you may be able to just spin it off the stud.

Think you're right, just zoomed in on the picture.
In that case I would hazard a guess it was over tightened and snapped off going down the road.
I always check torque setting if a vehicle of mine has gone into a garage.

I complained at my local tyre garage.. he said he always uses a gun because you set it to the correct torque.
Trouble is he didn't change it from the last car/van he did

I upset a guy once when I asked him not to use his windy gun on my locking wheel nut

You may be able to just tap round with a hammer and a small screwdriver
I'm going to try to remove the wheel this evening, hopefully you're right.

They should be tightened with a regularly calibrated torque wrench.

I had a similar problem with a local branch of F1 years ago. I discovered the gross over-tightening when I did the same as Anaconda, prior to a road trip.
Wrote a pithy letter to the centre's manager & ended up with a voucher for a free major service which I eventually redeemed for another car.
Think you need to take your business elsewhere, if my local garage did that damage I'm confident they would have remedied the problem before I collected the car, or at least ordered the part(s) if they didn't have them on the shelf.

Having used the rattle-gun they are supposed to re-check the torque with a calibrated wrench.
