strange whining noise and coupling prob

hi all just test drove a 2000 V plate freelander xdi station wagon. noticed that there was an occasional whine come from lhs front didnt matter if you were on power brakes or coast nor turning right or left seamed to come on for a few secs then stop for a min or so. any ideas???

coupling felt bit tight reversing round corners as if brake was on didnt need power to turn but was definatly having to work harder than i would expect on any other car. is this a new coupling job and if so guide price would be helpfull with haggling.

Why bother,there's plenty of them for sale for small money.Could be the turbo is on its way out,if you can get the price down and then down another £500 for a new turbo,go ahead and buy it.
