Hello
Car is a 97 4.6 HSE.
I have noticed a strange noise or sound coming from the right hand side rear of the vehicle. It's only noticable at low speeds, and mostly when I set off in the morning and the car is cold. I felt certain it was an old valve or balancing weight that had been left behind in the tyre, but I have now changed tires and the sound is still there. My suspicion of loose bits in the wheel is probably the best way to describe the sound. It's like a slow and irregular intermittent rattle as from something loose rolling about somewhere. There is no discernable vibration or anything of the sort, and it sounds like it's coming from outside the car but somehow detached from the structure.
If I could hear something at higher speeds, or even feel something through the frame I'd suspect a wheel bearing, but it seems to stop at any speed above a slow crawl.
Any ideas?

Regards,
Henrik

First thing I'd do is chock the wheels, jack the suspect wheel up and try and waggle it top to bottom left to right, then turn it slowly listening for any noises.

Then come back and post on here depending on what you find ;)

wheel nuts?they rattle with age as the outside casing seperates from the nut.move the nut by ur two fingers does it rattle?check the interior wheel arch plastic protector could be rubbing on the tire or loose.could be alot of things including an exhaust bracket/supporter.is it noticed on flat terrains or uneven ground?

Hi
Thanks for the input. I've been listening more carefully, and there's no noise on even ground. On cobbled stones and other uneven surfaces it's there. Surface must be very smooth for the sound to disappear. So it appears to be something loose and it doesn't sound like your typical suspension clonk - seems to be something lighter and less substantial.
Wheel nuts are new. I guess I'll have to get under there and have a look around. I find it odd that it's so much more evident when the car is cold.

Henrik... I have very similar sounds from my rear px area. Mine does it at slow speeds only and to start with I thought shocks but if you go over a speed bump or something you would expect to bottom out the shock; it doesn't and thus I don't think its a shock on mine. I'll post what i find with mine (if I do) in case it ends up the same thing. I'll be ****ed off if it turns out to be a bearing as Its had an MOT about 2 months ago. Anyway... good luck.

Hi
I haven't had the time to investigate yet. Let me know what you find, and I will do the same when I finally get round to it.

Thanks
Henrik

here we go - names of parts I know are on the car but never had anyone show me which bits they actually are (lack of practice I guess)... I'll have to have a look if I can wrap up warm enough to last longer than 5 min outside. Might take some pics to make sure I'm looking or checking the correct bit.

down load a coy of Rave from Green Oval website it is the maint manual has everything in there also look on rangerover.net lots of good info there once you get into it its not too difficult and the guys on here will give loads of advice and encouragement good luck

Just been out (Jesus its cold)... no bloody snow though.... anyway. I couldn't see anything out of place and could't wiggle any particular part.

However. If I rock the car sideways I can here the quite knock I'm trying to trace... I might end up with egg on my face here as my next move is going to empty everything from the boots spare wheel well as I do have cans in there of wd40 etc etc. Although I'll look like an idiot if it does turn out to be loose items in the boot, I'll be happy that its not going to cost anything. Will update once done - gotta warm up before I go out again.

could be the top shock bushes are worn and allowing light contact from the metal collars

This sounds plausible, although it doesn't explain why it gets better after a few miles of driving - maybe the shocks soften up a bit after a while, if it's cold when you start out?

Mine makes a noise much like your discribing, i would say its a worn shocker, once its been driven for a bit it stops. Nothing is loose and just passed mot ( and he let me look under it with him). I think its just wear in the componets of the shocker although it sill damps fine. If it was the n/s/r i would say its the sub in the boot come loose, as mine did this and banged every time i turned left!!!

It more than likley "gets better" with a few miles of driving due to the heat generated by the Wheel / use of the brakes ect ect ...Metal does expand if heated sufficiently.

I too get "Noises from my back end" .....(but the mrs says its only after having Crispy Duck at the local Chinese!!!!)
