I have a Range Rover 1989 with an engine no. that Landrover don’t recognise

it’s 25P12572B

Landrover heritage centre says it’s not one of theres & could be an American
V8

any ideas ??

Sounds like it had an engine swap at some point.

what does the vin decode as and what does the heritage centre say about the vin number?

Possible but where did this engine come from - it’s not RR could be 25P or 25F
Neither are Landrover ?

More comprehensive V8 engine are found here https://www.v8register.net/FilesV8/V8 engine number reference R7 30.11.07.pdf and here https://www.gomog.com/allmorgan/V8enginenumbers2.html

Having some background with these engines my guess is that you have a 25D engine that has a block mis-stamp which reads poorly, some of then are terrible. The challenge with Rover v8 engines is that most have been messed around with over the years...new heads, replaced engined, ECU's changed etc., that very have original numbers; especially where they're suffered water in block failure, been sent off for refurb' and having top hats fitted. What comes backs is a new unit with a mish mash of numbers.
