This is where a 300tdi sits when fitted to a 110 and LT77 gearbox, not too dissimilar to your 109. If you adapted the bulkhead brace / LHD steering box mount, you may have enough room for a 300tdi turbo. Mine uses Discovery inlet pipes from the turbo inlet at the rear to the air filter.

thanks - ive actually remade the engine mounts since the ones i posted on here for some reason my engine seems further to the left than that one but ive managed to get the standard 300 turbo on now - i was confident i'd got it in the correct position - i take it that ones factory?
 
I'd like to see a piccie of the hinged wings if you manage it.
i will post up some pics or a video clip - ive looked round and can't find many who have done it before - plenty of flip fronts hinged forward and backwards but this is the only hinged wing series or defender i can find
doing it this way you will see the external hinge but i think thats a small price to pay for the accessibility it will give.

The engine in the 110 replaced a 2.5 N/A diesel, so it is about 6 inches further back than a factory 300tdi, the same position as a 200tdi. I assume this is the same position in relation to the bulkhead as the 4 cylinder Series 2 / 3 engines.
 
just shows nearly everything's been done 50 years before

ive made one of the hinges today - 95% confident i'll be able to do it now the only thing im unsure of is how to fasten them shut i was thinking of mounting 4 overcentre clamps on the front panel it would be handy to have them there but it might look a bit crap......
ive mounted the front panel and radiator off the cross member today too and thats set in the position with the wing a hinge width forward so it will be a hassle to go back now
i will need to mod the inner wing a bit and possibly put some strengthening in - i assume the series 1 shown has had the wings modded for the same reason (dont think ive ever seen a standard series1 wing

i'll take some pictures of the hinges and post them up

You could always use a set of door locks and striker plates
 
yeah keep up the good work, id like to see what you do with the guards. so will that engine wreck the running gear?? or not.
you make the conversion look easy.
 
i think the problem with the door locks and strikers is it wont pull it tight enough - just spent ages googling pictures of different flush fitting catches but i cant find the ideal ones
but thinking about it if i use standard over centre latches the lower ones will be hidden by the A bar and i could put the top ones accessed from under the bonnet??
any of the running gear that isnt up to the job i'll just replace with stronger stuff

once its built i dont have any plans to ever sell it so i dont mind spending on stuff but i have a sympathetic right foot so we should be ok ......

this is a picture of the 1st hinge ive made sat in position - doesn't really show much but better than nothing
im making some supports for the front panel that join back to the bulkhead support brackets - i will also be able to mount things that were mounted on the inner wings to them

obviously i will shape the top part where it sticks out but at the moment im just testing it
ignore the square hole in the post - that was a bollock drop i cut it out and forgot to weld it up - only noticed it once it was painted ......... doh
 
it's 2k acrylic- i was tempted to change the colour but i quite like the origanal limestone
seems ok so far i'm no painting expert with my other resto's ive usually got someone to paint them for me but with the landy i just want something tidy but use able so i thought i'd do this one myself
 
when you talk to people you can say you did all the work to the landrover yourself. i like to do as much as i can that way its more work you can be proud of having done yourself i reckon.
the doors look really good from the angle of the pics so id say its a pretty good paint job then.
 
got one of the wing hinges bolted up - works ok in principle, the wing needs a bit more support but thats not a big problem

it only folds back as far as in the picture as it catches the door hinge but i'd prefer it this way over having larger hinges - its enough to get really good access to the engine bay anyway.

ive also fitted 2 of the doors - ive got a new roof to fit once ive sprayed it, i need that in place before i can line all the doors up as they are a mile out
the front panel i have made 2 braces that hold it in place when the wings are folded out the braces pick up on the bulkhead brackets - im going to mount all the other stuff on these, washer bottle header tank etc.
ive also got 2 88 van sides they fit in place of the 109 rear sides and give a bit more security for gear in the back as i'll not have seats in the rearmost part - i'll paint these when i do the roof

you can also see the winch bumper in 1 picture ive made this from scratch and it picks up on the original mounts and ties in with the cross member - i'll post more pics on this later as it's going to have a unique design feature (although im sure someone will have done it before) i couldn't get an off the shelf bumper as a defender one sticks out too far and a series one is too far back - as mine has the front grill moved forward but not as far as a defender
