well after i thought all was good after cleaning intercooler & radiator, and hoses, its not, the white smoke has gradually got worse & Temp rises slightly more than usual. but does settle with blowers on full wack.

im going to have my head gasket tested when he comes back off holiday next week, im just wondering if theres anything more to it than meets the eye, i will be doing the job myself in the garage,

ive read alot of threads on here and read the haynes manual lots over and over.

i no i need the new head gasket and head bolts. is there anything else worth getting whilest its all in bits or any little tips u guys have. and do i have to remove the turbo and exhaust manifold ????

While you have it srtipped id change the following.
Water pump, Thermostat, Cam belt and tensioner and check/change any core plugs you can get to.

the job is easier if you remove the manifolds, so new gasket will be needed. You could also replace the valve stem oil seals and the rocker gasket while you are at it.

As well as buying the head gasket you can by a "head gasket set". This will include all the gaskets and things like the copper washers that go under the fuel injectors (I am assumung you have a TDI) apart from the head gasket itself. When you buy the head gasket make sure you get the right one. There are three different thicknesses. The thickness is shown by the number of holes or notches in a tab that sticks out on the left hand side (when stood at the front looking at the engine), check the old one before buying a new one. Once you have the head off it pressure tested and checked for trueness, it may need skimming.
