Hi Guys.

had my gearbox and clutch replaced a few weeks ago - since then have a problem. When I release the clutch pedal, instead of releasing smoothly, it sometimes sticks slightly about half way throuhgh its travel - it makes a noise gives a bit then continues smoothly. This is particularly annoying at junctions as it can cause me to pull away with a jolt.

Any ideas?

I do intend to take it back to the garage that did the work but I would like to know what might be causing the problem so as to prevent them fobbing me off.

If there is alot of slack in the pedal as you push it down you can remove this by adjusting the nuts in the top of the pedal box. Under the bonnet clutch pedal housing you will see a plate with six screws, remove the plate and you will see the adjustable nuts and a locknut, be careful that you don't adjust so much that the clutch has pressure on it all the time. You will need some amount of slack.

My pedal was sticking fully down to the floor a few weeks back, i removed the same plate and put a little oil on the pedal 'hinge' and it was right as rain, they can 'stick' if they become dry. I think there is a grease nipple somewhere but i couldn't see one!

No grease nipple for the master cylinder I've ever seen or heard of... usually by the time the spindle is fooked enough to stick the pedal down the seals are so badly shot you'll need a pint of clutch fluid to change gear tiwce ;)

Won't hurt to grease it, but I'd be surprised if the new clutch springs weren't man enough to unstick the master cylinder - I'd be checking for a leaky master cylinder first if I were you and finding out if the garage replaced the master and slave cylinders at the same time as the clutch.

It weren't Mr. Clutch was it? Please tell me it weren't Mr. Clutch! :D

Hi Adz, i'm referring to the actual pedal itself rather than the master cylinder. At the top of the pedal 'arm' there is a big hinge/fulcrum/pivot whatever you call it! located in the top of the pedal box. Mine had dried/rusted and was sticking so when you pushed the pedal fully down it stayed down as it seized. After pouring a bit of clean engine oil over the hinge it was as smooth as ever. I was told by someone that there is a grease nipple somewhere on the pedal arm to keep it from doing this but i couldn't see it.

Hi Guys - thanks for the replies

I oiled the pedal pivot thingy a few weeks ago as it was sqeeking and driving me nuts. Will check it again though just in case

The master and slave cylinders were renewed about 12 months ago.

Sorry - not sure what you mean about the springs - would they need to remove the clutch again and replace them?

By the way - it was an independent LR specialist in the Leyland area wot did it.
