sticky clutch pedal

hi

my freelander has a very low bite point on the clutch and according to the missus is very difficult to get into gear sometimes and also she reckons the pedal has even stuck down a few times, does anybody know what could cause this?

its a freelander 1,8 petrol on a v plate
