sticking sunroof

hi there the fault could be the switch or the motor will cut out if it feels resistains . if you go to the rear you havto prise open the trim at rear of sunroof and and put screwdrive in slot on motor spindle and turn can be open and closed till you get it fix ok hope it helps

It will be a fault on the rails, fairly common problem only option to replace the faulty one, in reality better to change the pair. Cost £75 each side, and a real pig to fit and align, about 3 hours to do it, would be better to get roof shut and then pull fuse out of box and forget about.

The sun roof is pulled shut by two cables when it needs to drop down the cables pull on a plastic slide that turns a bit like a cam. This puts alot more strain on the motor and causes the 'gearbox' on the motor to jump causing the noise. On the 5 door the motor is behind the interior light. The normal reason for the excessive strain is one of the slides the cable is attached to breaks so the roof is being pulled by one side and twists.

Today, with the warm and beautiful weather, I had the audacity (as many more before me) to make use of my sunroof. All was well until I wanted to close it again, at that moment the left hand side worked ok but the right hand side didn't. So after a perfectly dosed amount of swearing, pushing, hitting aso.. I managed to have it closed again, my next step was booboodag's advice, remove fuse nr. 12, afterwards I put a layer of silicone around the roof. I hope it will stick on there as on the front of the frame in which the glass sunroof sits it's all rusted. Now with the silicone (hopefully) watertight it will be another worry less. (All by all I used the sunroof maybe 30 times, the last time a couple of years back to spray grease on all the gliders etc... all the mechanisms were still well greased but nevertheless it got stuck. The so famous designflaw as in the past on the US Freelander forum there were dozens of people having the same problem. This mechanism is just some plastic ****). It's a real shame LR dared to put that kind of cheap plastic things in place. In spite the car as such is a dream to drive and as I probably won't change cars anymore (seen my age and the little kilometers I drive it, 69.000 km now in 8 years), it will def. not be a LR anymore if I have to change anyway. Firstly as it will be a petrol one (and 3.2 l too much for me) and don't fancy all kind of crap anymore.

silicone dont stick to gays you need silicone grease.any plumbers merchants for **** pipe fixin will supply.It wont wash arf either.

Thanks BoB, feared already for that as, while I touched the silicone layer to see whether it was hardened enough to cut it with a cutterblade, I had the impression it came loose, so ..... Will try to find some silicone grease as you said.

Hi BoB,
After a night drying I saw this morning that after all the silicone I put on the sunroof was sticking solidly on it. The groove around is all filled up with it so this morning I took "the best a man can get" (a Gilette razorblade) and cut carefully the surplus of the silicone away so that I now have a (more or less) smooth surface with, hopefully, the whole sunroof sealed for any water and also better secured as not sure anymore since the right hand side glider etc. was out of order and had to push, with a screwdriver, the right hand lever forward in order to be able to shut the roof down completely. Anyway, if I notice any abnormality later on or the silicone getting loose I'll try to get some silicone grease to fill the gaps. Thanks again.

The only thing that silicone sealant won't stick to is silicone grease.

Thanks for the warning. Guess the grease was meant to have a watertight sealant, especially if introduced as deep as possible around the sunroof surface.

I have repaired 4 of these before, replacing the broken plastic bit with a piece of metal ( piano hinge). Its alot of mucking around, but at least it doesnt break again like fitting a new mechanism which is still made out of plastic.

Thanks for the info and the whole explanation in the referred link but as it's closed with silicone now it's going to stay like that. What I wanted to say is that mine worked from the beginning as yours seems to be doing now. First push and it tilted, to slide it open I needed a second push and keep the button till it was all open as otherwise it would have stopped the moment I released the button.
