Steering Wobble 65MPH+

Hi All.

I've still not managed to solve the steering wobble at motorway speed. Going 65MPH+ the steering wheel wobbles about 1/2 to 1 inch back and forth in my hands constantly. I've had the tracking done, changed all 4 tyres for brand new ones, had all wheels balanced and even had the wheel swapped around front to back. Nothing has solved the problem. Any suggestions what to check next? I get no wobble at anything but motorway speed. Only way to stop it is to drive under 65mph which is OK, but takes even longer to get from Cornwall (St Austell) to Dundee.

Hi there.

You've had new tires and had the tracking looked at/fixed.

Here's a few other things it could be;

Caster/camber
Worn CV joints
A bent rim or badly curbed alloy (whatever you have)
Warped brake discs (doubt that though)
Worn steering bushes
Worn/loose suspension components

Hope you find a fix soon. :)

Checked front drive shafts, all seems fine. Tracking done, tyres new, wheels swapped around, all balanced. I've just had it in to Mid Cornwall 4X4 for replacement diff bushes (another problem I was having, too cold to be arsing about in this weather). Asked them to check it out and everything appears to be fine. Drive shafts, ball joints, suspension etc. Have got it booked in on Wednesday to try and get this sorted out.

Mid Cornwall will tell you it's major even if there's just a pebble stuck in the wheel, fookin rip-off merchants! Go to DP on the moor.

Yeah, they didn't have a clue how to diagnose or fix a very simple fault and quoted a phenomenal amount to just investigate it - i thought their customer service was abominable, it was like they simply couldn't be bothered!

I've always had a really good service from DP though so just go there now, they know their stuff and are a fraction of the price!

Where are you based? Mid Cornwall are just up the road from me so it's convenience more than anything. The young lad there who does work on my car is excellent. I've only got the freelander at the moment so it's difficult to get back home if the car needs to be kept for a day or so.

I work in St A but live in the bodmin direction (Losty) so DP is probably a bit easier for me!

Mick Moore used to be in St Austell and he used to be really good (he still is but his prices are now a bit close to the dealers now he's up at Wadebridge!) - it's a shame coz he was very reliable and always willing to have a chat and help where he could!

The Freelander has been at Mid Cornwall 4X4 all day. 4 of the lads took it out and each felt the vibration and wheel wobble, however after checking everything on the car it remains a mystery. Everything mentioned in the forum has been checked. I'm going to try and have the wheels balanced again, I've been told this can be done on the car with strobes/lasers so everything is balanced not just the wheel.

Great thing was that the boys at Mid Cornwall 4X4 charged me nothing for having the car and trying to diagnose it all day. Shaun said that as they found/fixed nothing there would be no charge. Gutted it's not rectified, but really happy with not paying a penny. It's all safe so just an annoyance more than anything. Any other freelander drivers get this wobble at motorway speed? Like the steering wheel rocking back and forth about 1/2 inch each way? Look like a driver in an old movie.
