Hi

I just bought a leather steering wheel to replace my plastic one. Have had a quick look at Rave and it seems a straight forward enough job. Does anyone else who's had their wheel off have anything to watch out for? Or, any tips or tricks for any fiddly bits I may come across?

Cheers

I have upgraded to the leather steering wheel, Black leather arm rest to follow ;)

Just unplug the battery 20min before starting. I dont have the remote stereo control so replaced the button console with the other blanked one.

there is a horse shoe shaped weight/damper in the leather steering wheel.

This weight was fouling on the yellow SRS airbag wire, no matter how I tried it kept coming free, SRS light on.

I unbolted the weight and removed it, no more porblems, airbag is connected as normal ;)

That's a perfect answer. Thanks buddy.

Can you remember what size nut and torx they were?

(BTW - Black leather armrest is on my to do list too! ;) )

Cheers

TBH cant remember the size it was a good few years back when I changed it, its standard socket set size. Get a long stem socket handle or bit of pipe to lever it.
Put your steering wheel lock on before you loosen, otherwise it knees up around the wheel whilst you loosen, its not a good look ;)

Mark the wheel position to the splines, that will keep it straight. I wouldnt worry about torque on refit, just as tight as you can. Technically you dont need the nut, you would have to be a James May for it to come off when you are driving. Splines do all the work.

All done!

Took me a wee while to get around to finding the time to do it but it's now on. No real problems and had no trouble with the weight. Only fiddly bit was getting the airbag to sit as flush as it did on the old wheel. Took the airbag off and remounted it and it's better but definitely doesn't fit the new wheel quite as well (less than 1mm from flush).

Feels so much nicer to driver though!

Just ordered me black leather armrest to match my black leather wheel. Great day! :D

£17.99 off eBay from a main stealer - Was watching one in an auction on eBay last week and it went for over £50! Some people have no patience do they??

seen loads of it myself on ebay. always always check the price of something new before going on ebay. seen loads of things go for more than they cost new from a dealer. freelander 1 cupholders are a good example ! about £40 new from a stealer, usually make at least this 2nd hand on ebay.

p.s. if anyone has the dash mounted cupholders they don't want, £20 could be yours.....

No, no, no, if anyone has the dash mounted cupholders they don't want, £21 could be yours.....

Oh no. Wait a minute, is that how prices get so high on eBay..... :suspicious:

Grand job rriggs!
I was only half joking about the arm rest, it was only to join up to Mings black leather arm rest gang, there is a thread in here.

What about these cup holders, they take up to the XL cups from any drive through.
It lifts out again if I need the square cubby box again.
Best place to keep the 2 litre milk carton upright ;)

I wasn't joking  It arrived today and will get fitted tomorrow...

And the cupholders - I'm a short-arse and have to stretch down to reach the holders in the door so the top of the dash it's got to be!
