Before you all start pointing at the search button, I've done the searches but am still none the wiser.
Disco 1 300tdi, 89000k miles, relatively good nick. The steering tends to wander a bit on straight road. Nothing violent or dangerous, but it just doesn't like to go in a dead straight line and needs to be constantly corrected.
Its always been like this since I bought it at the start of the year, and its just had a set of std height H/D springs and new shocks from paddocks fitted. The old set up was getting a bit spongy after 15 years and I was kind of hoping the firmer ride and a set of working shockers would cure it but it hasn't.
It was Mot'd at the same time the springs went on and there is no play in the steering linkage. When parked up with the engine running, the smallest movement of the steering wheel gives a corresponding movement on the steering with no delay or slack. This is also the case if I reach in and turn the steering column by hand. However, I cant detect any play if I try to move the road wheels. It only has the std 205 tyres so I dont think its tram lining.
I'm a bit flummoxed as to exactly what can be causing this. I need to sort it as we pull a caravan ( hence the H/D springs) and it gets a bit wobbly at anything over 50mph.
Is this a common characteristic of older disco 1's? If so, is there a upgrade or mod that can improve it at all? Any advice as to where to look and how to resolve it would be appreciated.
Thanks for reading,
Paul

when did you last have the tracking done? usually zero degrees toe in/toe out but a touch of extra toe in can help with the wander a little if its nothing else.

hi had this prob with an old disco 1 years ago turned out to be rear bushes on arm holding rear axle causing a bit of drift on back end can be quite hard to spot as they are strong and need a fair bit of levering to show up play replaced with polybushes and what a difference hope this helps

All worth looking at, had the tracking done when I first got it and only done 6k on the road since then so dont expect the tracking to be out but Ill get it rechecked anyway.
Rear bushes seems to make sense, it always seems a little worse with the caravan on the back and the rear under load. Also, had to change a rear tyre on the drivers side a few weeks ago as it was scrubbing on the outer treads. All the other tyres were showing no signs of wear at all, so I put it down to a weak spring on that corner. If its the trailing arm bushes, could that have caused one rear tyre to scrub?

front wheels up in the air - engine off - turn steering wheel & check for freeplay in the steering box

ive done mine today along with a few other jobs.

i had a constant pull to the left and a wander on - adjusted backlash on the box (turning and adjusting 6mm allen in) and wound out front tie rod to straighten up the drop arm - seems a lot betterer!

just a thought my old disco was short of a couple of roll bars that was how they built them then 1990 if i remember they fitted these roll bars to 300 series 2 which improved roll but these discos are not built for speed or cornering had a few scary moments when i first got one i think you can retrofitt roll bars if you want hope this helps
