I have a 1984 110 with 2.5 turbo diesel engine fitted. Today I was driving along doing about 45 mph when suddenly the steering wheel started to wobble, and the car started "juddering" around. I hit the brakes and regained control of vehicle but it freaked me out. It seemed fine at lower speeds and when i very gently accelerated again it was ok but power steering felt slightly stiffer. What the **** is going on?? Also am having problems with a nasty "clonk" when changing gear. If I let the clutch all the way up before touching the accelerator i can minimize the clonk in !st and 2nd gear but not when changing from 3rd to 4th or 4th to 5th.It happens when changing down as well. I cant see how the problems can be linked but then I am no mechanic. Any help or pointers in the right direction would be very gratefully received. A chance for you guys to make one lady very happy!!!!:p
ps. have checked power steering fluid level, tyre pressure and linkages under vehicle and all seem fine.

How's your belt for the power steerin'? It might be damaged or just loose;)
It might be an idea to check your propshaft u.j's as well. if there's any play in them you will get a 'clonk' when takin' up the drive;) :D

Just remembered summit else. 'If' your motor has got drive flanges on the wheels, sometimes these can become worn as well. To check them, take cap off the centre, jack it up a little and give the wheel a wiggle to see if there's any play;)

thanx alot for the information esp steering u-j stuff. Have already changed front and rear props after the front one fell out on another of my driving adventures!!! I will no doubt be back to tell you how i got on and get more advice.
ps, I am somewhat confused....your picture shows you are an obviously sensitive but up-close and personal kind of guy, whereas your logo suggests more of a "rooftop and crosshairs" personality. Obviously multi-faceted!!!:D

 Ah've just bin phsyco-watsitted!!!!
:p ;) :D

just another thought, how's your balls?
Swivel Ah mean;) :D

Blimey, do ya drink from the furry cup then - if not then Buster int interested, it's no challenge!

Just another thought, are the brakes OK? This could be a wheel bearing if it happened very suddenly, and made it feel a bit wobbly.

The clunks point towards UJ though, which you say are new, re the wobble you could check all yer wheel nuts if it happened suddenly - don't want to lose one! Try jacking the front wheels up (DON'T GO UNDER IT!!!) and just see if there's any play anywhere, then if there is, try and "follow" it back to its source.

Was there any noise when the wobble started - sudden clunks etc?

OK i've taken on board your replies, well some anyway! Here's a chance to snigger behind your beer cans, but i have a theory...
could a combination of worn rubber washers on my steering rods, over inflated tyres and a worn horizontal shock absorber thingy cause a kind of "wobble resonance" at certain speeds?? The wobble only happens at 45-50 mph but not every time!! I checked out the other suggestions but nothing seems obvious.
