My steering on my 92 classic has recently become intermittently stiff as you turn the wheel. Having jacked up the front end and disconnected the lower steering arm from the box,the problem persists. I have lubricated both UJ's on the column down to the box with no difference and the pump seems ok as you can hear the engine note change on full lock. There are no leaks/noise from either the pump or the box. I have a replacement pump but I am reluctant to change it as I don't think its the problem. My next task is to source a replacement box. Will a standard ball joint splitter separate the lower arm from the steering box? I have my trusty Haynes manual to hand and have perused all the steering related topics on the forum but would really welcome any further ideas or suggestions.

Have you tried bleeding your steering box? Its quite simple and may help. It sort of helped mine, which had the same intermittent stiffness that would get really stiff for a second or so and then get easy.

Thanks for your reply SB. After a week of dithering about what to do and various threats directed at the car, the steering problem magically disappeared! Don't you just love Rangies!! It must have been the UJ's and the WD40 finally freed up the problem. Must now apply some decent grease to prevent it re-occuring.
