Hi, I am just starting to have problems with my steering lock on my 98 300tdi. It jams occassionally when you try to turn the key. This has happened before and I paid a fortune to have the lock replaced and then finished up with two jeys for the disco. Steering locks are a complete waste of time anyway. I would be quite happy to do without it, and if necessary the starter key - has anyone any experience of this, or can recommend an easy way of fixing it.

Many thanks, p3963

Mine does it semi-regularly, mostly when I've been in a hurry ;)

I find the best way to avoid it is to park and leave the steering heel straight, such that the lock doesn;t come on. If the wheel is turned a little with the key out and the lock engages is when it can sometimes happen. I figure the lock does't have to engage when I leave it as if any scrote tries to nick it, it'll set anyway.

If it does lock, press the key in a tad more and turn the wheel very slightly into the lock, that dis-engages it on mine immediately.

As Paul D says don't set the lock, just remove the key, I never ever engage the lock unless the steering is lined up which is rare.

Steering locks are a leftover from the good old black & white days when that's all that was to protect your car. It's all electronic immobilsation today.
