Steering guard/Sump guard??

Hi

Sorry to sound like an idiot here, but I'll be getting around soon to putting some offroad protection on my 90 and would like to know if a steering guard and sump guard are the same thing? Do steering guards also cover the sump on Defenders?

A steering gaurd like the one in this pic is just fine... your sump is out of the way so no concerns on that. You would be advised to get protection for your axles over the diffs.... you can see the front one fitted in the pic. Depending on what you have, a 90 or a 110 a couple of diff gaurds are cheap and easy to fit.

Thank you for the help MrJC. I was going to get some diff guards aswell, i was just a bit confused over the steering/sump guard thing because some online shops call the steering guard a sump guard.
What type of steering guard do you recommend, an aluminum or steel one & a 1 pcs or 3 pcs one?

I bought a 1 piece zinc coated one with towing eyes from Rebel 4x4 (£49.50) at a Landy show and got the diff gaurds from Paddocks (zinc coated) - Protection ...£12 + vat. Spend over £50 with paddocks and its free delivery

I couldn't justify Alluminium..... a bit pricey. Zinc coated is fine... galvanised could be worth the extra. Paddocks have a galvanised steering gaurd one piece with towing eyes for £42.13 plus vat that looks okay.
 
If you getting the steering guard, make sure you get one with towing eyes, saves you faffing about in the future with D rings and stuff..
 
id go with steel imo. ive got a steel one from paddocks i think and its taken some pretty big hits and is as straight as it ever was. A mate of mine has an aluminum one and its got a fair few big dents. Plus steel is a lot cheaper :D

Paddocks do one but it wasn't their website when I got it. It's 3 piece with towing eyes and galvanised. They call it thin but it's more than enough. Have a look at my profile if you're interested, that's it on my 90.

Pete i only fitted an alloy one as it was free! IMO alloy looks nicer which is fine on a chelsea tractor but i've had mine fitted for 2 years and it's bent pretty badly, i'll be going for steel next time. Towing eyes are definitley a good idea too.

i wasnt havin a go (well maybe a little one :p) just sayin tht steel is better imo and a lot stronger :D

I've got a couple of other questions: If I was to fit a steel one, how much of a hit will it have on the performance, or will you not really notice anything? - my 90 does quite a bit of duel carridge way driving & overtaking etc you see.
Last question, I've heard on other forums people saying that steering guards dig in to the mud/snow, especially when reversing and act like an anchor. Has anyone here experienced this?

OP if you had 25kg extra in the back it would not affect the performance would it:confused::confused:Like the othersI would suggest galv steel.Mine is good.I have heard that they can dig in during reverse recovery think it would have to be quite an extreme situation tho.If you dont drive in competitive events etc.the best idea is not to get stuck in the first place

What do you think of this one from Rebel4x4 Steering Guards, Diff Guards & Jate Rings for Land Rover Defender / 90 / 110 / Series II / Series III
Its the 3rd one down the Reinforced Rebel guard, this one is a bit more expensive and has a 5mm plate behind to add strength. Somebody on another forum said this one Steel Steering Guard with Integral Towing Eyes - Galvanised - for Defender RHD looked a bit weak.

I won't be doing hugely serious offroading as this is my daily ride, so some greenlaning and light offroading at the weekend is all I'll be doing. I'll also grab some diff guards aswell.
