Just checking my 99 DSE for its first MOT in my ownership
When holding the steering wheel and checking for play I have a slight up and down play and some side to side. Is this normal with the locking and adjusting type of column?
Could some one check their steering wheel play please and give me some feed back. the Column bolts do appear tight.

My P38 SE has no play at all; try releasing adjuster lever, move to slightly different position, rake and pitch, then re-lock adjuster - if it's been sat in the same position a while the locking cam is probably a lil worn!

I have tried all positions and still get the up and down play with the locking mech and some side to side. car drives ok but wondering about the MOT and is this play normal.

Should be held firm; either adjuster worn, column loose maybe?

IF they notice and IF considered excessive it will fail......if nowt else wrong give it a try I guess?

Try taking off shrouds to find out exactly where the play is. Then decide what to do. Assuming no play at wheel edge with engine running, then whether or not to take a punt is as Ridesafe says up to you.

Thanks for the replies. The play is when you rock the wheel rim at the quater past three position. The radial play is less than 10 mm. I have taken the covers off. The outer tube is rock steady so the play is in the sliding part.
