Hi steering column lock is controlled by the body controller and instrument pack and if it is not seen as "released" then it won't allow starting.

Best bet is either a good LR specialist with decent diagnostic equipment or a main dealer who can diagnose the car properly.

They seem to throw up odd messages as the battery gets old, steering lock or HDC fail are common. Some suggest a second earth from battery to solve it but I think its time for a new battery. Mine was showing HDC fail at 5 year old, new battery and never seen again.

Same thing happened to me in Morrisons car park.RAC man duly arrived and said it's a common fault, the steering lock mechanism module at fault - you give it a whack with a hammer. It's underneath the steering column - he took the lower cover off and if you pull the steering wheel out you can see it underneath. It's working fine at the moment but I've sent off for a replacement via Ebay - thirty five quid - and I'll get my mechanic to do the honours since me back's gorn again.
