simple question!?
can the steering box on a S3 be removed without taking off the drop arm. as mine is on solid and needs to be put in a vice.
is it a complete wing off job? i have to work in the street outside so need to do it right the first time
thanks to all

There is a special rigid puller that removes the drop arms. Doubt if putting it in a vice will help much.

not much room in the engine bay to swing the hammer with the pully on. and it ain't budging

You don't need a hammer. You need the special puller. It just screws in, pops the joint no problem.

Bought mine in the 80s when I first had a series, from VL Churchill. Expect there will be others available as well.

when I did my bulkhead I took the drop arm off at the other end so it was still attached to the box, although I had splashed out and bought the puller from hnj engineering

You don't need to remove the drop-arm when taking the steering box off the vehicle though. Just the bolts holding the box to the upright and wiggle it out.
I don't have a drop-arm puller, I use a bearing splitter and a harmonic balancer puller with a couple of bits of studding or some long bolts. They can be firkin tight.

someone gave me a tip once, remove the drop arm from the other end - leaving it attached to the column - and then you won't need the special tool

I was swapping the bulkhead though, not fiddling with the steering

That is probably what I did as I definitely didn't split them when swapping my bulkhead
