The steering box on my defender is leaking

Can anyone e recommend a reputable company that will sell me me properly rebuilt unit

I replaced the box on my lightweight coiler a few years ago with a rebuilt unit off ebay and it leaked within a month!

Thanks

No but you could try a seal kit if it leaks from the lower output shaft. Did my son's 7 or so years ago and have just redone it recently, not to bad.

I can try changing the seal ,I always assumed they leak there as the shaft is pitted / scored

(I also assume that's why the last rebuilt box I bought leaked)

Worth a shot as the seal is cheap

Seen a post on here about using a speedy sleeve? or something.
Maybe they will see this and give more info. Gives a new surface for a new seal to run on, surprised its not talked about more considering the problems we have with output shaft leakage.

I've done it on my RRC one.
It was quite a while ago & - so far - no leaks.
Used them on other things incl the crank pulley.

There was a very good 'how to' done by someone which I followed which gave the size of speedisleeve you need but unfortunately it disappeared when the photobucket started charging people a subscription for storage

Can be done without stripping the box, but it's much easier if you take the box off the car & do it on the bench/in a big vice.
Measure the depth of the old seal before removing it then remove it, fit the sleeve & the new seal kit.
You don't need to peel the lip off the sleeve, I didn't, but you need to seat to depth to take that into account.
You will need a length of tube as the fitting thing that comes with the sleeve isn't long enough.

Found this on another site & it links to the old LRO forum and a post by dieseldog who did it by stripping the box. Photos don't work, but it gives the size:

I read the neg reviews for one of the cheapy ebay sellers and he sends out copy cheap stuff even though the pic shows a top brand.

They are a proper steering company and you can talk to them and if you’re local call in!
I had a chat with them before I went head….
Good luck!
