hi all.

I over the weekend i have to change my steering box on my P38.
car has been veering all over the place lately and lifeted the car up and wheels are wobbling when pushed side to side. all the bars are fine and movement goes back to steering box.

problem is i have change a few steering racks in the past but never steering box.

Can someone give me a heads up and gimmie and tips on romoving them and refitting. cant really see the top of the box, im guessing the Power steering hoses are connected to the box???

how many bolts are there to remove and what size if anyone knows??

Thanks guys.

Steering boxes can be adjusted, a very small amount of end play in the output shaft will give a lot of steering wheel movement. But it must only be adjusted in the straight ahead position, checking for binds after this has been done. Most important thing to do if you change a steering box is to make sure it is centralised properly. Otherwise you will get steering wander. Instructions on how to do this for the various boxes used are contained in RAVE.

ok thanks for that, im going to give the adjustment a go in the morning. see if that works.

after looking at many pictures of the classic and p38 steering boxes, im still not 100 if the p38 box can be adjusted.
classic has an adjustment screw from what i have found out but the p38 box dont. seen many pics from different angles and cant find where to adjust it from.

really got to get rid of this movement in the steering, getting annoying now.
i be going in staight line and all of a sudden the car will veer left or right with out the steering wheel moving. its kinda dangerous so if i cant find the adjustment then im just going to swap it for a refurbed box, prefer not to tho as we short for cash at the mo.

can anyone point out where to adjust it from and how to take out the unwanted movement in the wheels???

There is an adjuster on top of box above output shaft. The shaft the drop arm fits on. It is a large nut with an allen bolt in the centre. Place steering in straight ahead position, undo big nut ( you may have to hold allen bolt) get someone to wiggle steering wheel slightly whilst you adjust allen bolt tighten large nut holding allen bolt. Check for binding lock to lock. No binding job done. Any play in input shaft is adjusted by shimming and is beyond the scope of the average joe.

thanks alot for that, i take a look in a min, 1 last thing, is it better to have to car jacked up so front wheels are off the ground to check if the wheels still wobble side to side or just leave it on the ground???

Thanks again.

You can adjust with wheels on ground, but lift the wheels to check for binds.

thanks, did that earlier today and adjusted the box and it has closed the gap so feels better, but also noticed the ball joint on the track rod is knackered so gotta change that in few days.

gonna just get a new bar and ball joints. the bar i got is rusted to f**k.
might be a possiblility that i cant unscrew the old ball joint to check how many half turns it needs to be back in line.

Anyone know how many turns it take to line the wheel back up with new ball joint. am i going to need to line it up with one of those sensors????

Mike.
