I've not been happy with my steering (300 tdi) as it seems to slightly jerk a bit from side to side at times. Now ive just had the tracking done, and all the play taken out via steering box by Landy specialist, which has made it 95 per cent better. But, it still has a slight wander.
Now my 2 front tyres are goodyears, which are crap on Discos my Landy guy says, and they are also on the absolute limit legally. They are getting changed this week, but will the naff front tyres effect it THAT much?
I was also told that they will due to it being perm 4 wheel drive, so the tyres are far more crucial than a normal car.
Any ideas or back up what ive been told???

well, legal tyres will certainly help a lot.
and its true that certain tyres seem to suit certain cars.
remember yrs ago, had a car with pirellis on it, it was undriveable. changed em for dunlops and it was fine.

Sounds promising, as it feels like both wheels occasionally decide to have a battle of direction with each other.
New tyres go on this week, and the guy i use is good. One man business and he has that thing that lacks a lot nowadays, customer care in mind. He will recommend the tyre regardless of cost, expensive or cheap, if its right for the car, he suggests it.
Cracking fella, and he knows his onions, so i will go with his choice of tyre and see if my little problem is solved.

having same problem with my 300 started a couple of months ago had goodyears on front for 2 years so its not the tyres but recently had mot done it passed but said there was slight play in track rod ends but not anough to fail could that be the cause ?

I have found that adjusting steering box up to much may also cause a wondering problem, when it is to tight the driver tends to over-correct while driving on the open road.

If you were driving a Tojo Landcruiser I would tell you to go and adjust your steering cone in the front cross member, but as it's a Disco, the only thought I had other than play in the steering knuckles, would be the bald tyres picking up all the slight ridges and grooves in the road. Bald ones tend to follow the lines created by the tar/asphalt guys when they make the roads, assuming they use a similar process over there. ( if they dont, I am just talking **** then, eh?):D

I assume you have done all the checks with wheel nuts and bearings being tight and air pressures up to standard?

What about the panhard rod anyone?

Ive just been told of a similar effect to mine and this was the problem.
Is it worth me shelling out for a panhard rod or not?
Thanking you.

P.S outback Jack, yes all nuts/pressures etc etc are ok.

Worn tyres = nightmare. Get the new ones on before you worry aboput the panard rod. If you really must fiddle with the panard, just fit new bushes.

also check the A frame bush/joint at the rear. and the steering shaft uj,s.
my disco also wanders a bit, hope to do my steering shaft uj,s this weekend.

if i get the time?
shes got me down for major works on the front room!

UPDATE:

Changed my tyres, and put on 2 new ones the tyre guy recommends. He knows his onions, not some faceless fitter.
Steering is almost, ALMOST perfect from what i felt driving home from tyre garage. So now im gonna change the panhard rod, and that should be it, perfect.
Oh, and i spotted an oil leak.... :)
Now ive got a leak, i sort of feel all cosey and at home. Its a proper \Disco now, it leaks :)

good news. what/which brand tyres did he put on?

Erm, round black ones............????
They are called nexons, nexus or something, made by Continental. He has just put 4 on his disco, and as he races cars on track days, and owns the business so knows his stuff. I generally take his advice. One thing i never do, is go by price. I always ask him what he recommends for what i want. Ive got pirelli scorpions on the back, and he reckons these are an excelllent match. Like i said i never go with the price, i let him suggest first, he's never ever let me down.
These were 50 quid each, balanced and fitted.
He's also a one man operation, apart from a casual helping lad he has, so he treats you right and dont have massive overheads.

well done. seems like a good deal. its amazing how a different tyre can make so much difference.
