Steel chequer plate?

Hi found someone local selling sheets of 3mm steel chequer plating quite cheap and I will eventually need some to patch up my 110 and to protect the wing tops etc. Most chequer plating on offer for defenders seems to be aluminum. Will steel be better or no difference ? I know that steel will need to be painted to stop rust.
It's going at half the retail price.
Probably a stupid question but thought I'd ask so I don't get stuck with a sheet of the stuff and it no good to me... Cheers

Upside is steels a lot stronger. downside is it's a lot heavier.

3mm steel is a helluva slab to go sticking on wing tops. it's thicker than yer chassis wall

would be ok for structural patches/repair sections but its a nightmare to cut,

I had some of the 6mm stuff and it was incredibly hard, took ages to drill and workwith

Will I be able to bend it without a table for bending? Was gona use it in the footwell to cover the the floor up to the bulkhead. So just the one angle.

That's gonna be quite wide, maybe mark it out and use a chunk of 2x2 running along the underside to prop it up, then use the landys weight to bend it

On the inside of the bend I'm assuming? It's looking like it's just too much hassle. Prob better of buying a sheet of aluminum chequer plating instead.

What do you mean?

Its easy to bend we use it for some recovery trucks n bangers all the time! Cut a slice where you wanna bend it, wedge it between to longer bits of box Section in a vice and a nice pull and it bends lovely. You can always run a weld on the side you sliced to strengthen it back up
