my 1997 diesel p38 wil start but takes quite a few turns of the starter before it fires up wheather its hot and cold i have had new glow plugs in but still no change it seems to start a bit better if i put jump leads from another battery to the battery on the rangie.and i put another battery on this norning and its still the same so could my problem be fuel related or is it somthing to do with the glow plugs or relay? any help i would be greatful

Assuming it has a decent battery on it, what mileage is it?

I'm new to diesels but my understanding is that you need fuel, air and compression. Assuming the compression is OK and the battery is whizzing it round then it must be fuel. If no air present in the clear pipe from the fuel filter then could it be the timing of the fuel injection pump? Someone like wammers will know best.

it has a 85ah battery on it and its covered 131000 miles and there is no air bubbles in the clear fuel pipe that i can see. it did cross my mind about the in tank fuel pump but i wanted to be sure as in the last month i have spent a fortune on the car and i no its getting to that age where it needs some attention but cash is runnig low. i might try a bigger battery first then if not then the intank fuel pump is next in line unless anyone has any other ideas? thankyou

In tank pump or low cranking speed. Battery needs to be at least 90Ah 750CCA, 135Ah 1000CCA is the biggest that will fit and makes a big difference to starting.

thanks datatek for that info i will get a new battery on and see if that makes a differance if not i will look at the in tank pump i am hopeing its the battery.

Alphaline 135Ah 1000CCA from Battery Megastore, about £98 delivered 4 year warranty. No affiliation, just a satisfied customer:)

had a look on battery megastore just waiting to get paid then i will order a 135ah battery
and get it on. i also noticed this morning that if i wait until the glow plug light goes out count to 10 the repeat again it will start first turn of the engine even without the jump battery conected so i think a good size battery will sort my problem

That sounds like low volts or a couple of glowplugs out, could also be the glowplug relay. See what happens with a new battey.

think its low voltage i have had new glow plug in it about 2 weeks ago and there not cheap ones. The battery i had on the car was duff so i changed it for another i had in the shed that i keep as a spare but its not the right size so i will see what a new 135ah 1000cca battery will do thanks for all your helf and info
