Hi all

Right i have been having problem starting my series 2.5 diesel the battery is fully charge it will start the engine once then on the second extempt the starter runs very slowly until it stops but the battery is still reading 12 volts

Once i connect it via jump leads to a running car the landy turns over perfectly !!!

I brought a new starter motor and fitted it tonight first turn with the key the start spun nice and fast and started the engine easily great !!

Turned the landy off tried to start it again all i get is a load of clicking from the starter motor  the engine doesnt even turn over !!!

Connect it via jump lead to a running car again and it starts perfectly

It has to be the battery would you agree ?? what i dont understand is if the battery is crap why does it still reed 12 volts ??

Please help guys all advise is gratfully recieved.

Cheers chris

could be the battery is just goosed and not holding any current, i find after a while old batteries will charge up to 12V's but put a lamp across them and they got flat in a couple of seconds, these batteries have usually been sitting under a bucket powering an electric fencer for months mind...

Flat batteries can show 12V, With a fully charged battery take the tops off the battery cells and get someone to turn the engine over, if you have defective cells they will fizz or bubble.
You can also use a hydrometer.

i ski, didn't know that. how's a hydrometer work with a battery??

A simple test to see if the battery is any good is to measure the voltage while under load, either with a volt meter or judge by the intensity of the curtesy light whilst cranking the engine, if you aint got a curtesy light rig up a light bulb if it seriously dimms whilst cranking then the battery is either discharged or shot

Cheers for all the help guys !!
I borrowed a friends battery (new battery) and it seems fine now starts her up perfectly over and over again , so ot looks like the battery was the problem

Can anyone give me a idea of what sort of new battery i need to get

Many thanks chris
