landy has been stood for a week or so whilst i changed over some wiring. now when i try to start it ( to drive to its MOT) the solenoid clicks away but the starter does nothing. i've got the pin thats strapped to the starter chassis grounded and the other large pin strapped straight to the battery. the terminals all get pretty hot aswell. in the past when i've had abit of resistance to ground the starter turns but very slowly so i'm abit baffled.

any ideas?

If ANY electrical connection gets hot that can ONLY be because there is RESISTANCE, and a flow of electrical current driven by a voltage.

H = I squared R T

HEAT (in joules) = the square of the current (in amps) times the resistance (in Ohms) times the time in seconds all divided by a constant J.

The ONLY three ways to stop it heating up are

Reduce the TIME to zero - don't switch it on.
Reduce the current in amps to so little it doesn't heat up - but you need those to run the starter.
ELIMINATE THE RESISTANCE

Two of those you can't afford to do.
One involves an angle grinder a wire brush and some Vaseline.

Rust is a lousy conductor of electricity by the way.
