Tried to start discovery last night it was slow turning over then smoke started coming from under the bonnet I had a quick look and I think it was coming from the starter I had this reconed the other day. Any ideas of what the problem could be. Thanks

The problem is the guy who reconditioned it !;) get a new starter & your money back

Who refitted it? You or the guy who reconditioned it?
If it was you then double check the electrical connections, are they all secure?
If it was the bloke who reconned it then get him to fix it

Get yourself a multimeter, and then check that you have between 0 & 5 Ohms between the -ive post on your battery and every other big bit of metal on your Disco!

Sounds like the main earth connection from the bodywork/battery negative to the engine block/starter motor bolts has gone missing or is broken.

Without that main earth, and it should be a big cable the starter motor is getting it's earth via the handbrake cable, and since it's neither big enough nor designed for the job, it is going to get hot.

Not bad earth NO EARTH ! I forgot to put it back on that's cost me a new hand brake cable, and no doubt a bit of abuse on here :) Well at least it's up and running again.

Right put new starter on and discovery starts lovely almost all the time but some time if I turn it over its as if the battery is flat it won't even jump off another battery but it will bump start this is a intermittent problem any ideas. Thanks
