Hi guys. Got a problem starting my 96 p38 2.5 diesel. Stupidly let it run out of diesel. Had a lot of trouble to get it started. Got it going and it runs perfect! But when I go to start it again it takes 5 or 6 or more times to get it to start then again it runs perfect until nxt start. Can anyone help??? Would be very appreciated! Thanks!!!

If the problem is only cold starting then it could be glow plugs, otherwise as you ran out of fuel I would be inclined to check the intank pump is still working.

It seems to have trouble starting wether hot or cold. Sorry if I'm a bit stupid sounding but how do I tell if the in tank pump is working. If the pump wasn't working wouldn't it not start at all?

The FIP will eventually suck the fuel through if the in tank pump is dead.
If you take the fuel filter off, check it's not full of ****, then get someone to turn on the ignition while you hold a bowl under the fiklter housing, you should get a good burst of fuel, if there is none the pump is dead. You could also check the pump relay but running out of fuel is the clue.

Don't diesel engines have pressurised fuel systems and if you run out you risk getting an airlock.

You might need to bleed the fuel system of air.
