Hi guys,

I have just registered as i think the guy who sold my dad our much loved 110 was talking rubbish, and i know forums like these are the place to ask!

It will start from cold, but it will only do so after turning over for about 10 seconds.

Its a 1990 2.5t (200?) on 90k, and does run a little lumpy like so many old disels do, so know doubt it struggles with compression a little when cold.

Q, As there is no light for plugs (which are tested and fine), how long should you leave them before turning the key all the way. Its seems to make very little odds but Landy man said 15 - 20 seconds, and i think that seems OTT!

I read about the leaking diesel pipes and will check next time i visit the olds.

Anything else to look for?

Regards

Tom

The glow plug warning light is the one with the choke symbol on, it's probly just the bulb gone, swap it for the low fuel warning light cos that'll get on yer tits after a while.

If it's the original engine it'll be the 2.5TD 19J the one before the 200 TDi.

15-20 secs is a little on the long side, 10 seconds from cold would be more like it but whats 5 seconds if your in a hurry get the pushbike out, if the plugs are OK make sure all the connectors are clean and sound.

Hi Guys,

Thanks for your replies.

I could probably do with a filter change to be honest.

Where is the sediment bowl?

Sorry for my ignorance, i have only been under the bonnet of the landy on two occasions.

Plug connections were all good, so i doubt its that.

I will definately swap the bulbs!

''2.5 NA Gutless or not??''

I'll have to have a good look at this one when i am next home. Its nothing i would ahve thought of!

Many thanks!

Tom

I have to wait between 20 and 30 seconds for my glow plugs to warm up, which means that they're probably knackered, but they're not broken so I aint fixing them (yet). My engine starts but doesn't tick over smoothly straight away after turning the key either. Once it's warmed up a little it's perfect.

Blimy!

I took them out and tested them, all were bright and skin peeling hot within about 4 seconds. That said i hooked them straight up to a jumper pack!

Considering it's fecking hot today, I just started her on a 15 second glow plug warm up, but she took a couple of coughs to actually fire up and tick over.

Your glowplugs don't really matter to be perfectly honest, if she starts after 5 or 10 seconds, keep doing it, there's less chance of you burning them out. They "landy man" may have been reccomending a good 15-20 seconds to ensure that they do give out enough heat to start the engine. Don't forget that it's not unlikely for one or two glowplugs in the series not to light up sometimes, so that extra glow from one or two otheres is important, especially when it's cold.

Hi,

The time i let the plugs stay on seems not to make much of a difference. I tried it for 5 seconds and she fired up after cranking for about 10 seconds as normal (normal being my Dad driving her and starting her after 15- 20 seconds of heat)

I was keen to know if i was right to do that, 20 seconds seems way too long, as all other diesels take no time at all and plugs are plugs to some extent.

As mentioned i was told you can burn them out too..

if your plugs are fine, you could also be losing current from somewhere in the engine electric curcuit. make sure all the wires to and from the alternator, starter motor, ign. switch and heater plugs are good. also check your earth strap which runs from the starter motor to the chassis. you could be losing current somewhere along the line. if there is a problem somewhere its not unknown for it to earth via the handbrake cable... so ive been told!

It turns over really well, and the main earthing straps must be good. I could run a amp/volt meter over the connection..?

Do the fuel lines have a non return valve in them?

In my friends old volvo you could hear the fuel on its way frm the front to the back everytime it had been left for a while and you went to start it i swear!
