Hi there,

Got a problem starting my 96 tdi discovery - starter motor whirs away but
doesn't engage with the starter ring, just replaced the solenoid and checked
the pinion action - all seemed to be doing what it should, so stuck it back
on and found it's not improved it at all???

Has anybody out there come across this before - and can anyone tell me if
the Bosch motor will fit (none of the online suppliers seem to carry any
Paris-Rhone gear - which is what I have at the mo)

Dead one-way clutch in the pinion?

Thanks for this - back to the Auto factors again today, see if they can
supply one, maybe try giving it a wash through. The problem seems to be more
prevalent first thing in the morning - as the motor warms up through the day
it's not happening as frequently....

Sounds like it. Spares are available for Bosch/Lucas versions,
who knows, they may be the same as a lot of these lesser known
makes are simply licenced clones of the original. 31.89 inc
VAT for anyone interested.

Washing is very unlikely to fix it - it's a physically worn out type of
problem that needs replacing (that said I've dismembered a few and
rebuilt them with new rollers). Bring back the old days of properly
rebuildable pinions that you can fix in the middle of nowhere with only
the tools that you carry.
