Just a quick heads up on this - my starter was not firing up just a click from the ignition relay - I have stripped the unit previously to clean the contacts in the solenoid but the problem came back. The usual cause is corroding and wear on the terminals and round plunger inside (it also happened on my previous 2.0DL)

Anyhow I came across this company on eBay - £9.99 for a repair kit - new contacts and plunger etc. Quick service and a doddle to fit. Well once you have the starter out (1 hr. to get it out repaired and back - I took manifold off for easy access)

I have no involvement - just thought it may be useful.

Had the same problem and phoned this company up ( open 7 days 9 till 9) and they shipped it same day, so no need to get ripped off for a new starter motor.

It's a simple fix to a problem - the contacts wear down over time and as one seems to wear quicker than the other the plunger ends up not seating correctly so arcs and burns.

This fix should be good for another 100k miles

Previously I went to a repair shop I know and they let me rummage through a box of contacts - I found two that were just about right but larger so cut and filed then to size - worked well.
