Had a scroll through other threads but can't find the answer to this - apols if I've missed it somewhere.
Starter motor's dead-clicking on one small area of the coils - not terminal yet but will obv get worse. It's been there since 1987 so makes sense to change it.
Looking at what's out there, there seem to be two options, both "smaller" units, "Defender TD type - replacement for larger S3 unit". Seems to be one after-market one everyone sells at c.£80 and then a Bosch version which is almost twice the price.
So the obv questions: is the Bosch one expensive because it's vastly better or or is it just over-priced, or is the non-Bosch one crap?
Grateful if anyone can advise please.

if it clicks but turns engine over fast enough when working then fit a solenoid kit to it ,otherwise the only thing stopping you fitting any diesel starter motor from 2 1/4 to 300 tdi is room because of exhaust ,i have used a few pattern most worked okay but you cant expect them to last like a oe one

Cheers James. It clicks and that's it - dead as the proverbial et cetera. Value in the Bosch one is life-span then, basically? Probably makes sense to spend it up front then. Thanks.

you can test motor itself by bridging top connector with main leads to it to the one below it with old screw driver etc to see if it is just solenoid
