He did say D3 2005 2.3 diesel.Need to be more specific on the model type
D2 was 98 to 2005
D3 was 2004 to 2009
D2 2.5 diesel
D3 2.7 diesel
Assuming its a td5? then starter solenoid contacts was a common fail point, parts on ebay cheape enough.
When testing starter are you powering the motor directly, or using the solenoid trigger wire to fire the motor? both are different things electrically.
So 2.3 has become 2.7! Wish my engines would grow like that!He did say D3 2005 2.3 diesel.

Get back and we'll help never fear we are OK really, just it's dinner time and the bear and wine is flowing!

thanks manthis eases my mind greatly . i still have the starter out of the motor so will get into it the morn an get a lookNow I only have Disco 1s and 2 but have had exactly the same prob. Can't guarantee this is it, but I would suggest you take the starter solenoid apart and check the condition of the contacts that make the circuit for the drive part of the motor once the solenoid closes. If they are dirty/pitted/worn/corroded then that could be the reason for your problem. Get back to us and don't worry there are D3 experts on here too. You are on the best Landy site in the world with massive knowledge and experience. don't worry, we'll get you fixed!
And if it isn't that then we need to look at where the pinion enters into contact with the ring gear on the flywheel.

Only other obvious thing to try is that the positive lead to the starter is fully connected all the way back to the batt, and that the batt is up to snuff, i.e.12.6 volts at rest.
Nice to hear you typing in Scots! There are loads of Scots members on here, we'll see you right!got the starter on living room table now lmao wifes no happy but hey ho
