stainless exhaust manifold

I think Bennehboy made up something similar a while back, but it broke. Not sure if he had a single piece exhaust flange though, or 5 separate ones.

Think I need to print that picture off and look at it more closely in the toilet, where the light is better.........................

Honest.

Had something similar made with a one piece flange, warped it within 30 minute. Skimmed it flat and cut the flanges and it faired much better, collector snapped off on the m1, couldn't core with the vibrations. Probably needed some support brackets.

We had a similar problem with exhausts on rover 2000 , I know it was a very long time ago but what you have had made is very similar in as much as the flange that fits to the head is a bigger mass of metal than the pipe and therefore expands quicker ending up with the pipe cracking at the welds ......
The fix for this was to cut this flange and take a slice out of it between cyl 2 and 3 , cutting the mass in half and so the expansion, I hope this helps you and good luck with it

I think that elbows and tees usually come in schedule 40 as standard, so are pretty beefy. The problem comes with stainless being more brittle than mild, especially where there is cyclic stressing. That's why high pressure steam vessels are still usually made in mild steel.

I would be really interested in seeing how this manifold performs with the suggested modifications - perhaps a couple of straps welded along its length top and bottom might help? Would only need to be 20x5 flat bar.

Sadly, I no longer work in fabrication, so don't have a "pet" welder or access to lazer cutting at this time. Otherwise I would have had a mild one made up to see if it stands up to the vibrations etc better than stainless.
